Keira Knightley: biography and career

Keira Christina Knightley was born in the South London suburb of Richmond on March 26th 1985; she is an English actress and model. Her parents are Sharman MacDonald, an award-winning playwright, and Will Knightley, a theatre and television actor. She first asked her parents for an agent at the tender age of three, but they refused, not wanting their daughter to follow them onto the stage. It was discovered at an early age that Keira had severe difficulties in reading and writing. She was not officially dyslexic as she never sat the formal tests required of the British Dyslexia Association. Instead, she worked incredibly hard, encouraged by her family, until the problem had been overcome by her early teens.
Her first high profile role came in 1999, when she played the part of Sabe, the decoy queen in Star Wars Episode I. Her part in the film was kept secret, and Natalie Portman was promoted as having played the roles of both the real and decoy queens so as not to spoil the surprise. A lot of fans still think Portman played both roles. Keira's 'breakthrough' role came with Gurinder Chadha's 'Bend It Like Beckham' (2002), which was an unexpected hit worldwide. She was cast in the big budget action film, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. It was perhaps no surprise, then, that Keira was on producer Jerry Bruckheimer's wanted list for the part of "Guinevere" in a planned accurate telling of the legend of "King Arthur". King Arthur was released in July 2004. Her biggest financial hit thus far, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, was released in July 2006. Knightley starred in some major films in 2007: Silk, an adaptation of the novel by Alessandro Baricco, Atonement, a feature film adaptation of Ian McEwan's novel, and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, which was released in May 2007. For her performance in Atonement, Knightley was nominated for a Golden Globe Award in the Best Dramatic Actress category. Knightley's only film of 2011 was the historical drama A Dangerous Method: the film depicts the turbulent relationships between fledgling psychiatrist Carl Jung, his mentor Sigmund Freud, and Sabina Spielrein, played by Knightley, the troubled but beautiful young psychoanalyst who comes between them.
She has reportedly been dating James Righton since late February 2011.
