Olivia Wilde was born Olivia Jane Cockburn (pronounced "coburn") on March 10, 1984 in New York City. Wilde was raised in Washington D.C. and went to school there, as well as in Massachusetts, where she graduated in 2002. She is the daughter of journalist parents Andrew and Leslie Cockburn and the granddaughter of writer James Helvick. Wilde has said that as a result of her family background, she has a
"strong journalistic streak", being "really critical and analytical". Her father, Andrew Cockburn,
is Irish, giving her dual US and Irish nationality and facilitating her
brief study at the Gaiety School of Acting in Dublin, Ireland.
She
got an internship job as a casting director for the movie The Girl Next
Door. She was given a small role in the movie starring Elisha Cuthbert.
Olivia also appeared in the films Alpha Dog and Turistas.She became known for her role on The O.C. as Alex Kelly; She was strongly considered to play Bond girl Vesper Lynd in the 21st Bond film Casino Royale but Eva Green eventually won the role. In 2007, another big break came her way when she was cast in the new team of interns in the FOX medical drama House; it was as "Dr. 'Thirteen' Hadley" in "Dr. House - Medical Division"(2004) that she achieved international stardom. She played Quorra in Disney's Tron: Legacy, which opened on December 17, 2010. Wilde played Ella Swenson in the thriller Cowboys & Aliens; in August 2011, it was announced Wilde would be leaving House to pursue her film career.
Wilde married Tao Ruspoli, Italian-American documentary filmmaker and son of Alessandro Ruspoli, 9th Prince of Cerveteri, on June 7, 2003, in Washington, Virginia, on a school bus with only a pair of witnesses, when she was 19 years old. The marriage occurred in an abandoned school bus because it was the only place they could be completely alone, as the marriage was a secret at the time. On February 8, 2011, she and her husband announced that they were separating. The divorce was finalized on September 29, 2011. Olivia Wilde is now dating Jason Sudeikis.
