Gemma Arterton: biography and career

Gemma Christina Arterton was born in Gravesend, Kent, England on February 2nd 1986. Her parents divorced when she was age 5, and so Gemma lived with her younger sister and her mother. After attending a grammar school in Gravesend, and attending a performance arts course, Arterton trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) on a full government grant. She enjoyed studying at RADA and felt she was open to the processes the teachers put her through.
Whilst studying at RADA, she landed her first professional role in Capturing Mary (2007) (TV). Her feature film debut came later that year, when she appeared as Kelly Jones, the inimitable Head Girl at St Trinian's. In 2008, she appeared in the James Bond film, Quantum of Solace. Chosen from around 1,500 candidates, Arterton plays Bond Girl Strawberry Fields, in what is described as a "nice-sized role". In 2009, she was the winner of Empire's Best Newcomer Award. Arterton was seen in the 2010 films Clash of the Titans and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, and played the lead in Tamara Drewe. Arterton has been cast to play Gretel, a modern spin on the children's tale Hansel and Gretel. The character will be an older version of the classic character who works alongside her brother Hansel (Jeremy Renner) as they track down witches for money.
On 5 June 2010, she married Stefano Catelli, at a secret ceremony in Zuheros, Andalucia, Spain.
